Music Ministry

Songs of worship, adoration and alleluias are in the hearts of the many people involved in Music Ministry at Christ Presbyterian Church as they prepare to honor the Lord in Sunday worship. Each week more than 150 dedicated singers, ringers and musicians gather in choir rehearsals here at CPC to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord" so that they may "come into His presence with singing" on Sunday mornings to praise and glorify God's Holy Name.

The Sanctuary choir is a family within the church family - caring, loyal and dedicated to serving the Lord with their singing talents. This choir rehearses several selections at each rehearsal to prepare music for a number of weeks in advance. A variety of musical styles is presented in worship services, using handbell, percussion and instrumental accompaniment on occasion. Anthems are coordinated with the lectionary theme of the day whenever possible. The Sanctuary Choir presents an annual Christmas Cantata, which includes the multiple choirs of the church.

Our adult Handbell choir, JuBellation, is composed of 14 dedicated members (plus our director - Joyce Dawson) ringing five octaves of handbells monthly in worship during the school year. This choir occasionally provides accompaniment for another choir or uses vocalists or other instrumentalists to accompany its own selection. Members fine-tune their ringing skills at educational workshops whenever possible. They also perform as an outreach ministry in the community at local nursing homes, assisted living facilities and private homes. The majority of this group have been ringing together for over 16 years.

Alpha Bell Choir is a youth handbell ensemble composed of eleven ringers who ring three octaves of bells. The young people in this choir learn basic music notation, rhythm and handbell techniques as well as poise and teamwork. They ring anthems frequently in worship services. This handbell choir recently attended a Young Ringers Festival sponsored by the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers.

Children's choirs include the Celebration (grades 3-5) and Kids of the Kingdom (grades K-2) Choirs.  These choirs sing monthly in worship services during the school year and present a Christian musical to the congregation and to the community during each school year. Their rehearsals are incorporated into an after-school program called Carpenter's Kids Club. Many Celebration members participate in the annual choral festival of the Orlando Chapter of the Choristers Guild in the spring each year - an overnight event for our children.

Mixed Blessings is an acapella ensemble of mixed voices. Each presentation is unique in its choral selection, voicings, and vocal blending.

Several soloists who serve on a rotating basis provide special music for the 8:30 worship services.

Annual Youth Sunday brings many of our middle and high school youth to roles as worship leaders through music - instrumental soloists, sacred dance, Teen Singing Ensemble, Alpha Bell Choir, and Instruments of Praise Ensemble.

While the Sanctuary Choir takes a break during the summer, members of our church family have opportunities to present special music in worship services as a Church Family Choir. This choir is composed of members of the church family who rehearse the anthem immediately before the 10:30 service.

A truly glorious addition to the music of our church is our 34-rank Casavant pipe organ. Purchased and installed in 1992, it is much appreciated by our congregation and considered desirable by recitalists. CPC has hosted several organ recitals for our church family and the Halifax community.

We are grateful to all participants in the Music Ministry of our church: organist, choir members, accompanists, choir directors, ringers, soloists, instrumentalists, and the myriad of volunteers who quietly offer their time and talent in behind the scenes assistance. Serving the Lord through music is an important part of the lives of all our choir members, including the largest and most important choir of all, the congregational choir.
