Children In Worship

Our tradition teaches that worship is to be with the whole family of God. Ideally, the family includes cooing babies and fidgeting children, as well as youth and adults of all ages.

Children begin from the moment of birth to take in sounds and sights, to learn language in order to respond to the faces they see, and to explore the world around them.  Worship language, the liturgy, and the church community need to be a part of a child’s development from the very beginning.  Children need to be a part of our worshipping community!

Worship Materials for Children
Children’s worship bags are available in the narthex.  These bags contain age appropriate activity pages, colored pencils, construction paper and a book with bookmark.  If you would like one, please ask one of the Ushers.  Also, feel free to bring a book or a quiet toy for your child to use.

Celebrating the Lord’s Supper
There is no age restriction for celebrating the Lord’s Supper, Communion.  Baptized children who are being nurtured and instructed in the significance of the Lord’s Supper are invited to partake.  Parents should determine at what point their child is ready to take Communion.  It is also encouraged that parents talk with their children, as well as helping them with the bread and the cup, during the worship service.

Education for Children
Sunday school is available at 10am for children between the ages of three through those in fifth grade (rooms may vary; please see posted schedule on bulletin boards around campus for details).  Children are also invited to come to the chancel area with their parents during the ‘Time for Children’  where they receive a  personalized message during the 9am and 11am worship service.

Tips for Parents:
·  Sit close to the front of the sanctuary so your child can see.
·  Help your child develop the habit of visiting the restroom before worship begins.

·  If your child does not read, let them hear you and they will eventually pick up words.
Show them where things are in the hymnal and bulletin.

·  When the congregation stands, this is a good time for your child to stretch.

·  Discourage your child from snacking in the sanctuary;
they will think this is all right to do so, even as teens and adults.
·  Answer any questions your child asks about worship.

If you cannot, ask one of the pastors after the service.
·  Encourage your child to play church at home.
·  Though we encourage your child to stay with you in worship,
nursery is available for children up to the age of 5 in room 11
.

 Tips for Adult Worshippers:
·  Please make children feel welcome.  Give them a smile and introduce yourself.
·  Remember that children mirror what they see.  Be a role model for children around you.

·  Encourage parents who bring their children to worship.
